The president Claudia Sheinbaum signed a decree on Tuesday to modify the General Transparency Law and asserted that this aims to strengthen the principle of maximum publicity.
The leader stated in her morning conference that the purpose is for "the federal government to be transparent" and to delineate "what can really be safeguarded" when it is in a judicial process or involves national security information.
Sheinbaum claimed that currently public servants determine what information can be disseminated, but with her decree, it will no longer be at their discretion.
This change will require public agencies to publish public contracts on a monthly basis, as they are currently released every three months, explained Raquel Buenrostro, Secretary of Anti-Corruption and Good Governance.
Additionally, she indicated that this decree is also focused on disclosing information about the subsidiaries of Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), including reports to foreign authorities, financial statements, corporate governance, operational policies, and contracts.
Secretary Buenrostro added that oversight bodies must disseminate additional information about the auditing program, statistics, status of audits, and follow-up on observations, and that the registry of external auditors' firms will also be made public.
She announced that a proposal is being prepared to reduce the number of reasons for which information can be withheld; the official specified that there are currently 17 classifications, but the aim is to focus only on matters of public interest and national security.
Raquel Buenrostro assured that following the transfer of the National Transparency Platform due to the dissolution of INAI, there have been fewer platform outages and announced that new download tools will be added.
