The coordinator of Morena in the Chamber of Deputies, Ricardo Monreal, warned that if Morena determines that legislators should request a leave of absence to run for other positions, including reelection, "we could end up without substitutes."
"We would have risks; I mean, the substitutes are the ones who would be called in case of separation. The legislative power would not cease to function; that’s what substitutes are for," he indicated.
In a press conference, he stated that as of this Monday, 41 federal deputies have requested a leave of absence to separate from their seats when more than 20 initiatives promoted by the 4T will be discussed starting in September.
"I mean that a significant number would separate, also from substitutes, which are now 41. We would put at risk the approval of important reforms, and that is neither correct nor convenient," he pointed out.
The also president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) confirmed that over the weekend he made a "respectful suggestion" to the national president of Morena, Ariadna Montiel, "not to consider the mandatory separation of deputies in office who wish to opt for consecutive election."
"This does not constitute an exception to the constitutional order, but rather a natural consequence of the legal design in this relationship between the Legislative Power and its members in the search for reelection," he explained.
Monreal emphasized that "the current legal framework does not establish separation from office as a requirement for those who intend to be reelected."
"On the contrary, both the Constitution and electoral legislation, the guidelines issued at the time for the 2024 election three years ago, the indications, and the resolutions of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary," he highlighted.
The leader of the Morena deputies recalled that "there is even jurisprudence from this tribunal on this matter."
"It states that there is a system in which the permanence in office within the legislature is legally valid, because a legislator does not manage resources except for their salary," he pointed out.
