EFE.- The Secretary of State of the Vatican, Italian Pietro Parolin, will arrive in Mexico on Tuesday night for a three-day visit that includes a meeting with President Claudia Sheinbaum and coincides with the eve of the 35th anniversary of the restoration of relations between the Church and the State in the country.
The Mexican Episcopal Conference (CEM) announced in a post on its X account that Parolin is coming to "strengthen relations between the Holy See and Mexico," following the official restoration of diplomatic ties between the North American country and the Vatican in 1992.
It also detailed that the agenda from August 4 to 6 will include meetings with Mexican authorities, the National Dialogue for Peace, and members of the CEM.
According to the CEM's announcement, Parolin will also attend meetings with Mexico's Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, the Mexican Foreign Minister, Roberto Velasco, and will preside over a mass at the Basilica of Guadalupe.
The CEM shared that the cardinal's arrival in Mexican territory will also be an "opportunity" to express "our desire" for Pope Leo XIV to visit the Virgin of Guadalupe and Mexico.
"May God guide your steps on this visit and allow us to strengthen the path to achieve an unarmed and disarming peace," emphasized the CEM at the end of its statement.
Sheinbaum's administration has been advocating for the visit of the Supreme Pontiff since early May of this year with the aim of promoting the message of peace in a country where nearly 78% are Catholic.
